BARE BONES is sculpture stripped to its essence with
simple lines and minimal shapes that insinuate monumentality. The raw
material is fallen trees and unearthed root systems. "You could
swear that the artist just got lucky, says art writer Linda Yablonsky
in an essay in the exhibition catalogue, "and found pieces of timber
that had bent and twisted into emotive shapes on their own. Schneider
chainsaws and chisels each new find…She scrapes, gouges, or cuts
each surface and then applies paint, sometimes with a toothbrush, adding
further embellishments in tiny pictographs of chalk, crayon, pencil,
and marker ink. Yet it all looks perfectly natural."
